THE GOOD AND BAD OF THE DAY

Friday, January 3rd, 2025

Longdenville, Trinidad

The day began with the ever so regular mangal arati the singing service to Krishna at the 4:30 AM time slot.  The deities here in the local temple are known as Radha Goipinath, the same as my deities in Toronto.  The temple, inside and out, is clean.

The crime that was being talked about is real.  A few months back, gangsters broke in and stole donations and other goods from the temple.  The male residents were tied up by ropes.  One of them, Kavi, my good friend from the UK, was bullied and now has major damage done to his knees.

Trinidad is not the only country where temples have been the target.  Many temples, including Hindu mandirs, have experienced the same problem with burglary.  Fortunately, no one died in the process.

There is something very clear to me – when the public turns its back on spirituality and becomes exposed to gun violence, sexual affairs, vulgarities, foul language, drugs, drinking – what do you expect?

On the bright side, I found myself happy to see and smell flowers of fragrance, food that’s local, lotuses, and more.  And drink, mabie, an extract from the bark of a tree, becomes a real treat.

Walking, however, is truly restricted because of monsoons coming down and deep potholes everywhere. Unless I pace the temple room, I’m not sure how I’ll pull off my favourite hobby while here.  Let’s see!
