PEOPLE AND TREES

Monday, December 16th, 2024

Halifax, Nova Scotia

After dealing with people, as much as I love them, it’s time for a break and to go into the trees.  On the BLT trail we go, once again, into a frosty zone of wonder which includes the knobby tamarack trees.  I know some people like that tree; in other words, not smooth, yet I still love them.  Mind you, some are smooth like the birch bark, flaky at times.  There is bark that is clearly bumpy on some trees.

Has anyone ever bumped me?  Oh yes!  I recall my little drama troupe got bumped from the stage for another set.  The actors were peeved, but we made the most of it.  At the location in an outdoor New Orleans Fest, the troupe was all in costume and makeup, and we were told someone else would perform during that timeslot.  The audience loved our troupe the day before like anything, but now… what to do?

Krishna gave me an idea.  “Let’s keep on the garb and regalia and pick up drum and cymbals and chant and dance for the tourists?”  All agreed!  Our curse became a blessing!  The nightlifers went crazy over us.  They loved the clothes.  They loved the beat.

Conclusion: those who bump into or bump you off could be those who bless you.  That was my reflection as we ambled northwest on the BLT.  On the trek I could not spot thorny trees.  Indeed, I’ve met humans who can play the ‘thorn in your side’ role.  This is all part of the monk’s experience.  You meet tough people, and if you turn the other cheek for them, it can serve to bring out the humble soul we can be.
