Huntsville, Ontario
Today became the first for using the new Huntsville facility comprised of temple, restaurant, and residence as a location for some dramatical entertainment. The modest effort at community theatre, which perhaps we could call “The Jagannatha Story Tour,” has brought us to this fine tourist city.
Devotees had been chanting beautiful Krishna bhajan songs, then I was given the spotlight to say something about New Year’s resolutions. An arati service then followed. Finally, our troupe presented the drama of the mystical appearance of Jagannatha.
Many folks from India are not always that familiar with this wooden representation of Krishna. That is one of the reasons for taking his manifestation around. And for those who identify with the colourful images of an actual trio in wood, our road tour enhances their affection.
One of the lines in this 40-minute piece goes like this:
“The Lord happens to have a sister and a brother as well, you know,” spoken by the original sculptor of the deities who happens to be an incarnation of Visvakarma, the demigod architect.
Summertime is the usual festive time for Jagannatha themes and the very attractive Chariot Fest, but even here at the start of winter, the popular deities well established in Orissa, India, are becoming more and more known. Let us put it this way, the threesome of broad smiles and stunning eye features are not the monopoly of the east, but are making a claim all over; hence, the term ‘Jagannatha, Lord of the Universe.”
