NEW YEAR CHEER

Tuesday, December 31st, 2024

Old City Hall, Toronto

THE NEW YEAR.

“First of all, we’ll need some good drummers.  They have to be willing to play the marching drum with mallets,” I explained to the boys who are managing temple affairs during the holidays.  “Additionally, we can use a speaker and microphone.  We will be outside in front of Old City Hall, our annual spot for greeting the New Year’s crowd.  People get all excited to hear the drum or drums, the chanting, and get aroused.  They’ll jump into our circle, dance away, and try to sing the maha mantra while being tipsy from beer and doped from marijuana.”

They got a little concerned when I told them the police may intervene on horseback when some hecklers appear, at least that’s how it has sometimes been in the past.  “But don’t worry,” I assured them, “Krishna always protects us.”

That sounded soothing to them.

So, what in the end transpired at Old City Hall at midnight and beyond?

To the beat of two marching drums, a bhangra drum, and a Congo drum, folks danced and tried their attempt at the mantra.  It was a fine party as usual.  The year 2025 started off with a bang.

There was a drizzle.  Yes, it’s been more or less a green Christmas season.  No one minded the snowless event.  We were wrapped up in a party and super glad that the name of Krishna permeated the night air and space.

The benefits of uplifting sound were occurring.  Even if one doesn’t know the meaning of the sacred words, like a medicine, they act.

A GOOD YEAR TO YOU ALL FROM CHRIS AND MYSELF.
