Ottawa, Ontario
We are on a blitz – a short tour. Our group of six are filling in a Christmas holiday with a drama presented to congregations in Montreal (which was yesterday) and Ottawa (on this day). Since this time of year is colourful, we chose to excite our two audiences with the magical story of Jagannatha’s coming into being before we trekked it home to Toronto.
The group troupe (if I could call it that since we don’t have a real name) did splendidly, especially tonight. A community hall was rented and after a stupendous job done, everyone was poised for the prasadam meal at the end of the program, when a pot of wholesome dhal collapsed on the floor with contents splashing the back wall all over the place. Yet everyone was fed with rice, an exotic subji, and cake.
The formula for a successful party with the Hare Krishnas is chanting, a philosophical message, entertainment, and feasting. Nothing vulgar generally enters. It is good clean fun and is nurturing to the soul. I think the scale could have been broadened in both places attendance-wise. Enhanced promotion could have helped. There are a lot of people out there that are not quite sure what to do with this year-end holiday. One beautiful thing about ‘formula’ is that it can apply to almost any circumstance.
And for me, being a monk who has been around for a while, I get a chance at these festive events to take time to support the various Krishna endeavours. It’s all about people. By the way, Krishna is also a person, and devotees are always in the mood to please Him.
