Berbice, Guyana
GUYANA IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME
When I first came to Guyana over the rainforest by flight
A passenger pointed out the infamous Jonestown site
Mass murder history was not my actual purpose
There are far more features that make me less nervous
I had walked the land with a guy from New York
At the coastline nearby the home of diverse shark
Yet one day while wading near that northern beach
A catfish poked a poison fin, a sting worse than a leach
My right foot became inflamed like never before
The treatment, tribal by nature, made me roar
This did not deter me from any future visits
Where oil and gas now burst with no prohibits
Guyana for me is a place for nature and people
One day I came upon a capybara, larger than a beetle
A cousin to the guinea pig, he showed up at public kirtan
He had been eating in someone's green garden
By the way, what are we going to eat? Some dhal puri?
With an entree of the fabulous seven curries?
Nice to dine somewhere by the seawall and ocean
Or by a mangrove where waves stop their perpetual motion
Whenever I think of Guyana I think of the lotus
Its canals are full of them, you can notice
I think then of the Gita and the lotus analogy
In the murkiest of water, it is a symbol of purity
The devotees of Krishna have made their mark
We're known for the fudge we distribute in the park
They call us very affectionately the 'Haribols'
Sometimes we come across with a bravado fanatico
There are some areas where I feel a discomfort
Due to a hot humidity the AC unit is so triumphant
Also I am just a normal monk but get respect over the top
I thank devotees for believing I've got more spike than a cough drop
