Longdenville, Trinidad
Monday morning may not be the most buzzing time in an ashram. That is my observation in some locations I go to. The previous day, Sunday, might do a little more than usual wear and tear on brahmacharis (monks) residing on the premises. At 4:30 AM, present along with myself, is Hansarupa, and my assistant, Kavi, is the priest of the altar. Eventually though, one by one, others appear that makes us family.
Hamsa plays great mridanga and I love to sing, taking the lead on most of the songs. That’s where I feel confident as I feel I am a fairly strict follower on the guidelines of chanting as given to us by our guru, Srila Prabhupada. At the same time, I like to share and pass the mic to others as the opportunities arise.
Few sannyasis visit Trinidad these days, but when they do come, a little extra excitement occurs. Class time for Longdenville is special because we are dealing with the section of the Bhagavatam that details Krishna and brother Balarama’s journey to the city of Mathura. They draw incredible attention to the citizens.
At breakfast, I’m served doubles, and the chef, Rajarsi, joins me. More food follows, delicious prasadam rendered in Caribbean style at noon. People make their way to the door, including Virama, a master massage man, and a group of mostly elders as they have the time for extra mantra power and talk. Time was slotted for my weekly Monday night Gita Zoom call for the Maritimes in North America. Mostly online were young folks, and our topic was on lust and how to channel such energy in the most dharmic way.
