Halifax, Nova Scotia
I got to that trail along Governor’s Lake and the Chain of Lakes extension nice and early at 4.30 am. I certainly was the only one there but before long a heron squawked, and a loon cried its long-drawn-out sound indicating the morning has begun. A wild rabbit scurried across the trail. When a human appeared, I was told by that friendly morning person that she saw a beaver in the lake working on home improvement. It was on top of its lodge adding wood branches to its dome.
To me, these are auspicious signs.
After an 8-kilometer trek I reached Hiren’s house for a mangal arati, an AM spiritual service with several families. This has become a usual routine for Sundays but since the Chariot Fest, is merely around the corner the group thought. “Let’s get some blessings before the big event.”
Truly, everyone is working very hard to make this third annual, the best. And I might add that one of the reasons for my coming was to assemble one of my dramas for the program – “The Jagannatha Story.” It is really a delightful piece and reads like a fairytale, then takes one to a more serious mode, which is one of love and devotion. My actors are local and there are two imports from Toronto for the performance.
Now while we are dealing with city officials, health inspections and so on on-site, and physical support, financial and moral support from many avenues a caller has been a bit of a troublemaker telling us to call off the parade. You can expect redneck dynamic in such a world as ours. “People are disturbed” states Canto 1 of the Bhagavatam.
