Vancouver, British Columbia

The very endearing pastime of Krishna’s heroic deed in protecting the residents of Vrindavana is being celebrated in Burnaby, Vancouver’s suburb, today. I flew for a visit here. Immediately, I was slotted into a program to explain the significance of Krishna's doing so, in the most extraordinary way by raising a popular and prosperous hill called Govardhan. Indra, the god of rain, was relentless in creating a flash flood through endless rains. Krishna sited swiftly to remedy the calamity and everyone was just gratefu3l victims of a week long torrential storm. Indra, himself also expressed gratitude to Krishna, the Champ. “Apologetic” would be appropriate

A little bit of humbling goes a long way! Candles were offered to their lordships, the deities of Radha Madan Mohan, by congregants all in queue. It is a tradition in the month of Kartik. Apart from the lineup for offering flames was a circumambulation by others around a decorative hill representing the great Govardhan. They were chanting to my lead on the kirtan. There was endless bliss exploding in the temple room- so much joy. People were in their best-dressed attire, like the crowd in Toronto celebrating Diwali.

In general the public is becoming more and more familiar with events like the New-Year called Diwali and Govardhan Hills triumph.

There were massive signs at Toronto’s Airport, at least in the interior, to commemorate these age old festivals known in India. I see a merging of the East and the West. The culture is changing.
