Mayapura, West Bengal

Being Saturday, so many pilgrims have come from Kolkata and the surrounding areas increasing the numbers and intensifying the sense urges.  No harm!  Mayapura is neither Mardi Gras nor Disney World.  It is a family-friendly, God-centred place.

Numbers haven’t actually reached that of the Maha Kumbha Mela that attracts millions claiming to be the largest assembly of humans on the planet.  But, Mayapura is a huge draw on the weekends.  Everyone feels it here.

One of the features of Saturday is the ox bullock procession (formerly Elephant procession).  Artful decorations of coloured rice flour and flowers decorate the streets.  The all-attractive drumming and chanting make it unforgettable as an experience.

For myself and the drama crew, our proposed last performance was on.  We met with a full house.  I was happy to see some of my godbrothers and sisters attend including dear old friend, Niranjana Swami.  The actors gave their all.  Five film cameras were on board.  Filmmaker, Pradyumna, gave his best.  I was so proud of the production.  Great reviews such as, “Highlight of the festival!”  Vamana was a big hit.

One item that really did it for me as far as being a memorable event was lunch with my peers, GBC members, and the like.  It was Italian on the menu, rendered to perfection all but for the carbonated lemon water.  Just too much salt content, but that’s it.  Can’t complain, really.

Chronic complaining is a community’s worst foe.
