Christie Pits, Toronto
Udhava came to see me. “Obeisances ! Do you want to go for a walk?”
“Yes ! Now ?”
“Now ! Yes !”
We burst out the door, may our way down on Avenue. Inside, I was rejoicing that the city is finally doing something about the street’s narrow sidewalk just north of Davenport St. It looks like the sidewalk is going to be widened. This is sweet for pedestrians, sad for motorists. The concrete blockades are pointed bright colours with animal themes. I guess its one way to put some ease on motorists who have viewed the six lane road as a raceway. Colours do reduce pain.
Udhava and I turned right (west) on Bloor. It was 5:30 p.m . The sun starts its descent and shoots its rays east. This is excellent. Warmth is in our face. To both Udhava and I smiles on other people’s faces is evident. There is a happiness in the air.
We stopped by to see Subuddhi, our communities mother. The best cook. It was a pleasure to see her. She is aging, a bit lonely. Udhava swept the autumn leaves off her front veranda. We departed and a van stopped. The driver honked. He backed up. “Remember me ?” he said.
“Sure do !” He’s an old Jewish friend who loves eating at Govinda’s.
Udhava and I carried on. Down this back lane we were struck by some good artistic paintings on garage doors. Neighbours who don’t invest in colours on the wall tend to get graffiti all over their garage doors. We finally hit Dupont St. which is clearly being re-defined with so many new condo buildings. Here also we get received with warm smiles. It must be the sun and the saffron.
