Kitchener/Stratford
The churches are kind to us. In Kitchener, devotees of Krishna meet weekly at the lower level of the Grand River Unitarian Church for sangha. Sangha basically means spiritual gathering. Here we celebrated Gaura Purnima as we had done at St. Andrew’s in Peterborough yesterday. The community organized themselves well and they included a short drama skit that which is always a treat. It goes to show that some homework has been done – gathering information from the scriptures to pull out details that form moral codes for an audience to benefit from.

The second church facility was spacious and was in Stratford at St. Stephen Anglican where an almost duplicate program was run. Shakespeare is really big in this town. The theatres draw people from all over the world beginning in May, running until October. But, we are not theatre goers (it’s not against our philosophy, per se). We prefer to chum together to glorify Krishna. This is always a pleasure to speak about his heroism.
In both cities, I managed to clock in a few steps, check out the neighbourhood, and hoped to meet other pedestrians. I find that quite satisfactory. When do these small city folk get to see a monk, for God’s sake? It’s very rare! I like to surprise. This checking out process happened just minutes before the programs began. The philosophy is if you have time to kill, then kill maya, illusion, with your eagerness to walk, chant, and smile at those who need it. Kill with kindness.
