The Annex, Toronto
When Gurudas recently came to visit, he gifted me with his latest book, “The Swami - Who Rocked the Worlds” which is a photographical essay presentation of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. I wanted to share with you all on excerpt of this work entitled, “Morning Walks.”
Walking in the early morning with Swamiji was a special treat. He would share random subjects of wisdom, sometimes picking up on something that interested him in the environment.
Walking by his side, I felt secure. He walked and chanted with a bead bag on his right hand and a walking cane in the left; and when he stopped to point to something in nature, his words filled my heart and soul. When he looked toward me, he looked right into my inner self, it felt that way; it was nonjudgemental, just looking and making me feel good.
Sometimes we took the Swami to different places in the park. Once, in a wooded section of Golden Gate Park, deep inside the forest, a policeman came driving slowly through the woods on a cement path. The cop leaned out of his car and waved, “Hiya, Swamiji,” he said, smiling, and drove on.
Swamiji turned to us and said, “He has seen me on television.” His appearances in the media were increasing daily ; and the positive response was exhilarating.
Once he saw one of us shivering from cold trying to impress him and advised, “There is enough tapasya (austerities) in this world, so we do not have to invite any more difficulties on ourselves unnecessarily. Please put on your coat.”
